Asian business magazine talks up Vietnam’s trade

The Far Eastern Economic Review (FEER), Dow Jones’ monthly magazine on Asia, has paid tribute to Vietnam’s sea-born industries.

The country’s seafood, ship-building, oil and gas and maritime tourism industries are viewed as its strength, according to the magazine’s September 2007 issue.

Aside from the sea-born economy, Vietnam is emerging as a leading exporter of coffee, pepper, rubber, garments and footwear. The runaway economy has created jobs for millions of unskilled labourers, a large majority of which are women from the country’s rural areas.

However, the magazine recommended that Vietnam should gradually shift from a processing economy to high-tech industries to reap the benefits of value added goods and services. (VNA)
